Cherub and Two Fresh Album Has us Begging for More [Free Download Below]
By Casey Jones
Two artists that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to collaborate have combined to make 13 of the sexiest minutes of music you’ll hear this year. Unplanned Parenthood is the brain child (or maybe birthed child?) of Cherub and Two Fresh of Elm and Oak Records. Both duos have had a busy year touring, but made the time to team up on this 3 track effort. Those who were lucky enough to have VIP privileges at this year’s Electric Forest got a late night/early morning sneak preview of the EP but it was not officially released until just recently. With Cherub handling the vocals and Two Fresh manning the beats this EP delivers on every level.
The entire EP serves as chronological telling of a hot, tumultuous relationship: The beginning/good times, bad times/end and the after thoughts that dwell long after the relationship is over. “Lovvver” describes (in detail) that feeling of finding someone that drives you wild and wanting to do nothing but “head to the backseat / fuck the party / now we’re screeching / let’s get naughty”.
With its faded drum pad beats and very retro synths this track would be perfect for cruising around Vice City trying to pick up girls with Tommy Vercetti. “Next One” wastes no time letting you know that things aren’t as magical as they used to be. “Bored ain’t the half of it / All you do is ever bitch / Think it’s time to make a switch / Need a new sidekick”. The mood on this beat is much, more dark and slow, a fine case of when the music and the lyrics go hand in hand. “On to the next, on, on to the next one / Don’t even think I just move right past em”, classic. The final track, “We Are…”, glides over a smooth beat and a vocoded chorus that cements Unplanned Parenthood’s place in the Baby Making Music Hall of Fame. When we’ve got nothing else, all we are is human and all we have are feelings. That’s the message behind this song and a fine message indeed.
From beginning to end, Unplanned Parenthood is a musical triumph. Cherub & Two Fresh may have inadvertently created a new cross genre of pop and r&b. We can only hope that more artists will listen to this and take note. If you’re in the Denver area, be sure to check them out at the Bluebird Theatre on December 15th as they debut Unplanned Parenthood LIVE. And if we see an unusual rise in the population, say 9 months from now, then we know who to thank.
