Simian Mobile Disco @ Neumo’s Crystal Ball Reading Room
Neumo’s is a comfy space. Its coziness give performances the same air of familiarity that you’d find at a house party. No stage barriers, lenient security (no pat-downs), and a side bar under the balcony with relatively cheap drinks. (Think $4.50 vodka Red Bulls. Nothing prohibitive.) But while house parties don’t usually charge a $20 cover, house parties don’t usually feature internationally renown electro duos. The unconventional electro house act keeps a pulsing kick to anchor the looped keyboard melodies. In
Simian Mobile Disco’s case, the keys sound like early cell-phone ringtones that eschewed retirement for the chance to make scantily-clad women shake their hips.SMD went on a thumping musical tirade, punching buttons on sparkling midi grids, unplugging a melange of wires, and gliding around their circular mixing set up amid the popping strobes. The whole thing compelled me into a jittery sway. And no, I don’t suffer from epilepsy.
I just like to dance. If you do too, Simian Mobile Disco is a refreshing slap in the face.
