CHESHIRE – THE FUNKD UP EP
By: Casey Jones
When you think of Australia a few things come to mind: Marsupials, Dingoes eating babies, Foster’s, The Great Barrier Reef, Steve Irwin… the list goes on and on. One more thing you can add to that list is dope glitch hop! Already known as the home of Opiuo, Australia also lays claim to several other talented glitch hop producers and most of them are a part of Adapted Records. Every week, on their soundcloud, you can find multiple, new tunes that will put that little extra funk in your step! Their latest release comes to us from Cheshire, the newest member of the Adapted Records family.
The Funkd Up EP features 4 soul filled, glitched out tracks with each track a little more soulful than the one before it. “We’ll Be There” kicks the EP off with a smooth piano and horn sample before diving head first into some seriously crunchy glitch funk. The track repeats “girl, don’t you go nowhere…” and if that girl went anywhere she clearly doesn’t know how to get down. “Smokey Joe’s” makes you feel like you’re in a sexy jazz lounge circa 1959 then slaps you in the face with some 2013 funk! I would chill with all the homies at Smokey Joe’s Café, believe that. “Get Down” makes you want to, well, GET DOWN! More horn samples mixed in with some squiggles, wiggles and anything else you can think of that iggles make this an instant ‘get on the floor and dance’ tune. This track honestly sounds like it could have been made by Opiuo. “Robins Rocket” is the final and best track on the EP. I bet you never thought “Rockin’ Robin” could sound so damn dirty but Cheshire succeeds and then some at glitch funking up your grandma’s favorite song.
Cheshire delivers an absolute banger from start to finish. If you didn’t know who he was before you read this then hop on board the bandwagon cause I’ve got a feeling it’s about to get real full in 2013! Check out his facebook and soundcloud accounts and if you want more of that funky fresh glitch hop then do the same for Adapted Records. They know what’s up and can certainly Ray John in the land down under.
