Lightning in a Bottle Preview By: Josh Krol
Picture your body as a threshold of organic energy, and then imagine the immaculate blend of emotions and connections that music festivals create as the bright light of happiness that flashes inside of us all. In essence, that reflection is what festival organizers, The Do LaB, are trying to encompass with Lightning in a Bottle Festival.
Based in Los Angeles, The Do LaB’s mission is to craft experience as art and bring communities together through electronic music which can be seen with the “Great Convergence” event in Egypt and the Oasis Stage at Coachella.
Now in its 8th year, LIB has established itself as one of the world’s most unique and innovative festivals, not only because of its incredible music acts, but also the festival’s focus on visual art, sustainability, performance art, and spiritual living. This year, the festival moves to a piece of paradise known as Lake Skinner County Park in Temecula, CA. From July 11 to July 15 thousands of Cali-bound festy goers will come together to bring to life to one of the more distinctive festivals in the nation.
An eclectic array of electronic artists is slated for this year’s festival including Tycho, Griz, PANTyRAID and Nicolas Jaar. As a surprise addition, Purity Ring has also been scheduled for a steamy weekend.
Ambient synths cover an array of tight and low electronic beats. Purity Ring is a Canadian electronic music duo from Edmonton, formed in 2010. The band draws influence from dream pop and R&B. Delivering a sophisticated range of chopped beats that flow playfully alongside crisp and joyful vocals.
PhuturePrimitve and ill-esha will both be laying down deep melodic dub at the festival after coming off a successful dual album release tour earlier this year. Phutureprimitive continues to polish his unique blend of rolling melodies with chest vibrating bass on his newest album, Searching for Beauty in the Darkest Places Part 1, and brings an energy of his own to the stage. The beautiful and talented ill-esha’s newest release Whiplash Recovery is a testament to her glitchy down tempo sound that has come define her music.
Also fresh off a new release, Paper Diamond will be coming through to unleash his raunchy melodies and heavy bass tones. This former bassist of the Pnuma Trio is now at the helm of the rapidly growing EDM scene with his newest project which was jumpstarted by Pretty Lights Music. The Paper Diamond sound contains a raw energy and brings the party every time.
Be sure to catch the beauty that is Emancipator. Melodies flow and intertwine like a symphony of bass music. Dense layers filled with horns and violins in front of a catchy drum beat have come to define Emancipator’s silky smooth production. Often playing with a live violin player, Emancipator’s set is sure to tickle your soul.
Papadosio’s fresh blend of livetronica will be one of the only bands on the lineup this year. Blending electronic dance elements with a jam band style, this band has bright future ahead. These Ohio natives coordinate Rootwire Music and Arts Festival in their home state in early August. The band seems to tour non-stop while pushing a positive message of spiritual harmony that only fits in with the LIB mission.
You can’t have an electronic music festival without some groovy house music. With names like Miguel Migs, Lee Burridge and Tim Green you will have plenty of deep grooves that will keep you shuffling your feet all weekend long.
Although most of this lineup reaches out to the “other side” of the EDM spectrum filled with glitch, ambient wobbles and downtempo, the Cockney Thug himself is also headlining. Rusko and his in-your-face brand of turbo boosting dubstep have made him a front runner in the expansion of the genre. His live energy is unparalleled and is a great addition to an already diverse lineup.
“Our goal with the music is to create a positive and uplifting experience, with a good balance of beautiful melodic music and good old party music. After 4 months of in depth research and a lot of listening we tried to cover as many genres as possible that we feel fit the vibe that we’re trying to create with Lightning in a Bottle,” Jesse Flemming, Co-Founder/Curator of The Do LaB was quoted saying in a press release.
Other than the music, one of the more unique aspects of this festival is known as The Lucent Temple of Consciousness. This gigantic retreat made of recycled and found objects will house hundreds of workshops, speakers, world music and yoga over the weekend. This coupled with The Golden State’s natural beauty sets the scene for a gorgeous experience. Lightning in a Bottle’s new location sits on a big blue lake in the Southern California Mountains. The website claims that the Lake Skinner location is “more compact so even though there is more open space, it’s all closer together and easier to navigate.”
People who come to LIB come for more than the music. Often times they come for spiritual healing or use it as an expressive outlet, other times they come to bask in the atmosphere and energy Lightning in a Bottle Festival has come to encompass. Connections are made and families are built at this one-of-a-kind gathering and this year is shaping up to be stellar in a great new location.
