Another masterpiece of an EP brought to you by Pretty Lights Music. Long time producers and friends Michal Menert and Break Science (Boram Lee and Adam Deitch) have collaborated on the Twilight Frequency EP released though Pretty Lights Music and Thissongissick.com, it consists of five tracks of sheer bliss. Taking funktronica to a new level, and furthermore bridging the gap between live and electronic music the way Pretty Lights music seems to always do so well. The EP is a fusion of Hip Hop style beats, funky bass lines, old samples, and smooth synth jams. Each track has its own style and groove, and will keep you dancing from start to finish.
The first track on Twilight Frequency is called “Electric Touch”, the song begins with a looped piano riff that brings one’s mind into the twilight zone. Layered with a fat hip-hop drum line and some heavy trap-style snares this beat has a poignant yet funky vibe. The beat progresses into a familiar sounding heavy synth heard often from Break Science and a harmonious style that is common from Menert. The beat has a smooth and slow feeling to it yet still makes you want to get up and dance. About three minutes into the composition the song reaches a bridge consisting of the same looped piano riff and a sample of a man saying “in the eye of the end, I am dancing, on the moments that surface like stepping stones crossing over… for they come together like hands reaching out for the electric touch.” My personal interpretation of this is just a message to keep dancing, and to rage on. The song breaks back into another expressive vocal sample and plays it’s way into your soul and onto the next track.
Track number two, “Out My Window” is a four-minute song that just simply grooves. It begins with some chilled out chords that sound like they could be played while you’re riding in an elevator. The song drops into a sample, and some cool relaxing vibes that make you want to just kick back and roll one up. It has a familiar tranquil melody that has become a staple in so many of Menert’s productions. The tune has a bridge with a small guitar solo, and some of those funky key-notes that we’ve come to know and love from Break Science. There is a sample repeated throughout the song saying “the sun is shining, the clouds are grey” it brings the listener to a backdrop off a beautiful horizon. This track is soulful and groovy throughout and has an extremely laid back vibe, perfect for a cruise.
The third track on the EP “Throwback” is a jazzy tune that sounds like it could be an instrumental for an Earth, Wind, and Fire song. The smooth synths, jazzy bass, and high horns give it a disco-funk feel. The beat begins with a buildup and a heavy lead that is very recognizable in many of Break Science’s tracks. The song bumps for about a minute and a half before a funky bass heavy synth solo that would make anyone want to start getting down. The beat progresses back into the rhythmic funk that is so well known by the Pretty Lights Music fam, and just plays out.
The next track is “All Eyes on You” the song begins with a serene vocal and a massive buildup. The breakdown and drop of this track personally reminds me of some older Pretty Lights songs off of “Filling up the City Skies” . It has a majestic and funky yet deep melodic drop laced with some hip hop style beats and fat 808 snares that makes for a beautifully produced electronic anthem. It has a classic kick and snare drum line that keeps you bouncing throughout with scales and rises that build the hype and drop the funk.
The final song on the EP is called “Goin Down” it’s a bass heavy track with an eerie and ambient type of feel. It begins with a looped bassline and some hip hop vocals followed by a heavy drop and a harmonious synth line that sounds like an electronic soul orchestra. The tune reaches a bridge followed by a vocal sample only to drop back into the almost tribal essence of the song, and another vocal sample singing “goin down, down down..” The song ends with a building vocal sample and leaves you wanting more.
Twilight Frequencies is truly a work of art, it can be enjoyed in the convenience of your own home, played at a party, or thrown down at a live show. This EP is funky fresh from start to finish, and is a classic for any true PLM supporter. The soundtrack brings us back to our roots of true jazzy soulful dance music and reminds us why Pretty Lights Music is holding is down so hard. Thanks to Break Science and Michal Menert for a beautiful production.
