Tycho’s project mastermind, Scott Hansen, proves that his taste in visual art and music is distinctly refined through the multi-media project’s album art, show posters, projected visuals during live shows, and (of course) the music he produces (with bandmates). There’s something about Tycho’s aesthetic that has always said both “cloudy burnt orange skies” and “sand dunes” to me; his music seems to narrate these colors and images.
This mix, released in honor of Tycho’s current Australian tour on Vice Media’s music outfit Noisey, evidences more of Hansen’s polished musical preferences, each distinct but threaded together with the reverb-heavy analogue synths characteristic of Tycho’s sonic oeuvre. Including tracks by Bonobo, Jamie XX and Caribou feels almost requisite for this mix to hook listeners in, but the first track’s skipping melody (Telefon Tel Aviv’s “the Birds”) is worth listening to a few times to glean that particular sound’s full majesty.
Expect Tycho’s sphere of influence to steadily continue its global expansion.
