Wow. I Can’t believe this weekend is finally here. I’ll never forget being at my first Summer Camp Music Festival and seeing the posters for THE 1ST North Coast Music Festival plastered along the fence lines. The Chemical Brothers, Nas & Damian Marley, Umphrey’s McGee, The Disco Biscuits, Pretty Lights, De La Soul, Flying Lotus, Jay Electronica, Future Rock, Two Fresh… I was still very young in the scene but never had a lineup caught my eye and made me go “woah.” the way that one did and that was just the first wave! The later additions of Lupe Fiasco, The New Deal & Grace Potter only built my excitement to a fever pitch. When the gates finally opened on that fateful Friday my friend & I were walking around to get a feel for the place and stumbled upon Paul Kalkbrenner. The rain started to drizzle ever so lightly as he began playing his remix of “Mad World” by Gary Jules. This was my “Welcome to North Coast” moment and I never looked back.
Today marks the five year anniversary of a festival that came along at a time when the Chicago music scene desperately needed it and it would proceed to change the game in this city forever. From The Chemical Brothers blowing everybody’s heads clean off year 1 to 75 minutes of non-stop adrenaline from The Disco Biscuits last year there have honestly been way too many memorable moments to count. There will no doubt be a few more moments to add to that list this year. All you really need to know and what I’m pretty sure a lot of you do is that whenever STS9 & Bassnectar are at the same festival it’s going to be an epic weekend.
Everybody knows that Rothbury is my home but I would be telling you a lie if I didn’t say that North Coast is a family tradition. The amount of people I’ll be seeing this weekend that i truly love fills my heart with joy just thinking about it and for a lot of us it all started with the very first one. To everyone who’s had a hand in making North Coast the best music festival the windy city has to offer, thank you. You’ve built something that will forever have a place in my heart and I know I’m not just speaking for myself either.
It’s just about time people so let’s do what we all do best… Ray. John.
